It is with great sadness that we learnt of the death in Cambridge on 10th February of John Gage FBA, a Courtauld alumnus (PhD 1968) and one of the most remarkable art historians of his generation. His first book, Colour in Turner (1969), based on a PhD supervised by Michael Kitson, was followed by a series of ground-breaking studies of colour, including Colour and Culture (1995) and Colour and Meaning (2000). After a spell as lecturer at the University of East Anglia, he took up a post at Cambridge, where he became Reader and Head of Department before retiring to Italy in the 1990s. Ranging from Apelles to Rothko, from Ghiberti’s optics to the art of the Australian Aborigines, John Gage’s scholarship was unmatched. All who heard him lecture will miss his singular wit, his warmth and his passion for his subject.
